<image:caption>Here is an insight to how I prepare myself!</image:caption>

<image:title>Teaching Tools - The Ways I Prepare For Auditions - I have a checklist I use for the week before.</image:title>
<image:caption>To start I try to run the piece everyday without warming up. I want to see how accurately I can play without mistakes. I challenge myself throughout the week to play for friends, teachers, and colleagues. Playing for other people causes even the tiniest bit of nerves to build up which can prepare you for the big day. At the end of the day I record myself and take notes on what to improve on for the next day. Lastly, I clean the piece. I do rhythms, try sections memorized, and do lost of tedious slow work.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teaching Tools - The Ways I Prepare For Auditions - The night before.</image:title>
<image:caption>Something I heard when I was preparing for my first set of college auditions is that you will not learn an entire piece in one evening so don’t overplay the day before. If you do not know it then you don’t. Overplaying can only cause you to over stress on the little things and the night before should be restful. I run through the piece entirely, do some rhythms on the passages I have found the hardest during my time learning it, and then I put the piece away.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Do not over do it. Be ready to show your audience or judges why you are unique. I like to warm up, tune, play a full run through, then tune again. Enjoy this day! You worked very hard to get here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teaching Tools - What I Learned from Private Teaching: In person & online edition - Your teaching space is a sanctuary for your students.</image:title>
<image:caption>Students shouldn’t feel guilty for playing wrong notes or making other small mistakes. They will play their best and grow the most as musicians the more comfortable they are in their lessons.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Teaching Tools - What I Learned from Private Teaching: In person & online edition - Positivity > Negativity</image:title>
<image:caption>I always tell my students positivity will get you further than negativity. The more positive you are about a challenge the more likely you are to succeed. Even if you don’t like something push through and look at the benefits.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Teaching Tools - What I Learned from Private Teaching: In person & online edition - Guidance can go a long way</image:title>
<image:caption>I have found that when my students struggle with practicing it is most likely because they don’t know how to or they struggle with being overwhelmed. Break it down and finds ways for them. For example, I try to build a perfect practice set up with my students. Maybe they have a colorful music stand, a candle warmer, pretty lights, or anything that inspires them to use the area. I also encourage them to try to make practicing a habit. You can’t always rely on motivation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teaching Tools - What I Learned from Private Teaching: In person & online edition - Every student is different and learns differently</image:title>
<image:caption>I change my teaching styles based on the student and their needs. Most of the time I have to come up with something on the fly that will help the student understand the topic I am teaching. I also do my own research there are so many blogs….. like this one ;)… that can help you out.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teaching Tools - Things I Have Learned Private Teaching Online Edition - Make a space you want to work in.</image:title>
<image:caption>I like to have my space a particular way. It is clean and organized with my flute handy as I need it. I keep all of my students’ music organized in a side pocket on my desk and I have a journal to keep track of everything my students are working on. This creates a more comfortable space for me to teach from.f</image:caption>

<image:title>Teaching Tools - Things I Have Learned Private Teaching Online Edition - Keep music and teaching platform on separate devices.</image:title>
<image:caption>I always have the music my students are working on next to me whether it is on my iPad or physical paper copy. Do not keep the music on your computer because then you can’t see your student on the screen. You need to be able to go from the music to observing how your student is playing just in case something isn’t working.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teaching Tools - Things I Have Learned Private Teaching Online Edition - Observation tips</image:title>
<image:caption>You need to make sure you can see your student and the entirety of the flute. I always make sure their phone is set up horizontal so I have a full view of the flute. This way I can see if their hand position is correct, but also if they are tensing in their shoulders. Always be patient and descriptive sometimes it can be hard to demonstrate when you are not in person.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teaching Tools - Things I Have Learned Private Teaching Online Edition - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>I prefer Google Meet. I never have issues with hearing my students and they usually do not need to adjust their audio settings. It also uploads the meeting right into my Google Calendar. Zoom is a great option, but make sure that you and your students have original sound for musicians on or then you won’t be able to hear them. Facetime is easy if you are comfortable with your students’ parents having your phone number and if you have an iPhone.</image:caption>
