To start I try to run the piece everyday without warming up. I want to see how accurately I can play without mistakes. I challenge myself throughout the week to play for friends, teachers, and colleagues. Playing for other people causes even the tiniest bit of nerves to build up which can prepare you for the big day. At the end of the day I record myself and take notes on what to improve on for the next day. Lastly, I clean the piece. Something I heard when I was preparing for my first set of college auditions is that you will not learn an entire piece in one evening so don’t overplay the day before. Break it down and finds ways for them. For example, I try to build a perfect practice set up with my students. I always make sure their phone is set up horizontal so I have a full view of the flute. This way I can see if their hand position is correct, but also if they are tensing in their shoulders. I never have issues with hearing my students and they usually do not need to adjust their audio settings. It also uploads the meeting right into my Google Calendar. Zoom is a great option, but make sure that you and your students have original sound for musicians on or then you won’t be able to hear them.
